What's a message board?

Well, you're on one right now.  Just by reading this post you're using a message board for what it was intended - gathering and dispensing information.

Message boards are also known as Forums, Bulletin Boards, BBS, etc.  Any place where the general public can post and read messages back and forth to each other is the same thing by any other name.

They are extremely useful for niche tasks, like filmmaking, film festivals, etc.  Hopefully, you'll find DWF's message board a good place to get your questions answered - or if you know the answer to someone else's question, to chime in.

How Do I Use It?

Every message board has it's own lay out, but they all base themselves on the idea of a major topic, followed by posts about that topic, each called a thread.  Threads are made up of the original post, followed by replies to that post.  Some threads can become quite long, as discussions go back and forth.

Here the major topics are all Forums, and run down the left side of the main page.  Down the right side is the last post in a thread within that forum.  To go right to that thread click on it.  To see all the threads within the forum, click in the Forum name on the left.

It sounds complicated, but just start clicking and you'll get the hang of it.

How Do I Start A New Forum?

The short answer is, you can't.  If you think we've left out a major topic heading, shoot me an e-mail and I'll make the Forum for you.  Better to see if you can figure out where to best post a new Topic.

Okay... How Do I Post A New Topic?

Find the Forum that best suits your Topic and click on it.  At the top of the list of Threads is a link that says NEW TOPIC - click on there and type away.

In case you hadn't noticed, "Thread" and "Topic" are synonymous.

What do I Say?

Anything you like, really - though there are some rules of thumb to keep it a happy place.

  • Keep your language relatively clean - just in case your mom reads it
  • Be polite to others - You can critique what other people say, but do it in a nice way.  Doing otherwise is called "flaming," and can get way out of hand.  It is surprising how personal a BBS can get.
  • Reply to other posters, even if you don't have much to say.  The more you give the more you get.  Message Board Karma.
  • Have fun!
So.  Where to Start?  Hit REPLY in the lower middle of the screen and tell me if this post was helpful - or say thanks, and offer some other basic information other's might benefit from.  Then explore!  Look around, and post, post, post.
